Lo Zen e la terracotta
Innanzi tutto mi scuso con quanti nel post precedente, hanno ricevuto più di un avviso nella loro casella di posta: ho fatto un errore di invio. Questo è anche il primo post a cui aggiungo una traduzione in inglese perché si sono aggiunti dei lettori fuori dall’Italia. Non me ne abbiate per la traduzione un po’ incerta.

In questo post vi mostro una statuetta in terracotta, di 20 cm. circa di altezza, bozza per un lavoro per la scuola di Plastica Ornamentale di Guido Lodigiani che realizzai poi in grande, credo nel 1993.
Il lavoro è ispirato al libro di Robert Maynard Pirsig ”Lo Zen e l’arte della manutenzione della motocicletta”, une delle letture clssiche per un ventenne con un minimo di dubbi sulle cose che lo circondano.
Lo lessi diversi anni fa, durante il primo o secondo anno di Accademia, e riflettendo sui contenuti del libro, rappresentai quanto sentivo in quel modo: La statuetta rappresenta una forma antropomorfa che si differenzia in base al lato da cui la si guarda: da una parte il corpo liscio, geometrico, e la testa tondeggiante, grezza, appena abbozzata e rugosa. L’altro lato presenta invece la testa squadrata, liscia, con le caratteristiche dell’altro pezzo di corpo, e le gambe grezze, sempre abbozzate.
La bocca è un foro che mette in comunicazione i due lati e da essa diparte una breccia scura, che si protrae verso il basso, presente in entrambe i lati ma non comunicante. Anche i lineamenti del viso presentano sullo stesso volto diversi caratteri, divisi lungo l’asse verticale del volto, secondo quanto già descritto nel post precedente Volti Duali. Un sopraciglio arcuato e uno disteso, un occhio stupito e uno rilassato, una ruga sulla bocca e dall’altra rilassatezza. Come già descritto nel post sulla maschera di gesso e sul vaso, in quel periodo lavoravo parecchio sull’inserimento nei visi di più espressioni.
La statuetta è una riflessione sulla dualità, sulla numerologia. Da questo trassi un lavoro in grande formato in gesso e armatura metallica, che è però andato distrutto perché lasciato alle intemperie. Aggiungerò una foto appena riesco a scannerizzarla.

In this post I show you a terracotta statuette of 20 cm. in height, draft during the Ornamental School of Guido Lodigiani in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Turin. I realized then a great version, I think in 1993.
The work is inspired by the book by Robert Maynard Pirsig “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” one of the classic readings for twentys with a minimum of questions about things around him. I read it several years ago during the first or second year of the Academy, and reflecting on the contents of the book, representing what I felt in that way: The statuette is an anthropomorphic shape, which differs according to the side from which you look at it: on the one the body smooth, geometric, and his head round, rough, barely sketched and wrinkled. The other side shows the head rather square, smooth, with the characteristics of the other piece of body; legs are raw, always sketched.
The mouth is a hole that connects the two sides and from its base depart a black slot, extending downward, present in both sides but not communicating. Even the facial features have the same face different characters, divided along the vertical axis of the face, as already described in previous post Dual Faces. One eyebrow is arched and the other relaxed, one amazed eye one relaxed, a wrinkle on the mouth and other side relaxation. As described in the post on the plaster cast and on the vase at that time I worked a lot on the inclusion in the faces of several expressions.
The statuette is a reflection on duality, on numerology. From this I drew a large format work in plaster and metal skeleton, which has since been destroyed couse I left to the elements. I will add a photo as I can scan it.
